There can be little doubt that human cultures are impressively diverse and unique. However, it is interesting that while our languages and customs may very greatly, there are some core customs that are quite similar. This is especially true when it comes to the language of love. Somehow despite the massive barriers that have separated people throughout history, different cultures still manage to agree on a few key social conventions, such as marriage and the wedding ring.
Amazingly, weddings and wedding rings have made their way into every major culture and geographic region across the globe. Generally, wedding rings are worn on the left land and on the fourth finger. The exact reason for this is unclear, but it seems safe to conclude that this is due, at least in some part, to the fact that roughly three-quarters of people are right handed. Many people like to have their dominant hand free of any encumbrances. The custom of wearing one’s wedding ring on the left hand may find its origin in this fact.
Around the world, it is also quite common to find that wedding rings are inscribed with declarations of undying and unwavering love. Coming up with just the right inscription for a wedding ring is a romantic gesture that the bride will never forget.
Metals have been used extensively in wedding rings due largely to the most obvious points, namely metal’s durability and beauty. It is only in recent times that metalworking has become more widespread and common. This, of course, means that in ancient times a metal ring, especially a beautiful one, would have been a rare and valued possession.
One must be impressed by how widespread the custom of exchanging wedding rings is across the globe. The circle is a perfect symbol for what all couples hope for their love… that it will be eternal. This is one of the reasons that the wedding ring has lasted to this day, and it will likely last far into the future.
