The Capital Museum: A Stone’s Throw Away from Beijing Hotels

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

The City of Beijing, previously known as Peking, is China’s political capital. With more than 17 million people in its jurisdiction, Beijing is the second largest city in China after Shanghai. To facilitate the movement of its citizens, visitors and the goods they produce, the city is built with dozens of railways, motorways, seaports and a modern airport. This fact makes travelling to this great city a lot easier.

As an old city hosting many significant tourist attractions, she always gives the traveler a sense of awe. The coexistence of the new and the old add to this great feeling. Not to mention, a number of Beijing hotels which are only a few minutes away from these landmarks help visitors save time by making them visit many spots in a day.

Chinese life sits side-by-side with their culture. This is the reason why a number of museums have been dedicated to the preservation of this unique characteristic. The Capital Museum, which opened in 1981 and renovated in 2007, is one of the biggest and more interesting. It now houses over 200,000 relics in its collection.

The museum’s frontage is based on human and cultural heritage and exemplifies the integration of the past and the present, art and modernism, history and nature. The gigantic roof and the slope at the entrance are derived from traditional Chinese architectural style, and the stone exterior reminds one of the walls of ancient China. Bronze, timber and stones are widely used throughout the museum to represent a deeper sense of historicity. Also, a glass curtain wall, which gives a grand and transparent effect, reflects a sense of modernity.

There are three permanent exhibitions in the museum. The first, entitled “Ancient Capital: Chapter on the History and Culture of Beijing” shows the intricacies of art, dance, architecture, trade, commerce and transportation of the early Chinese when ruled by the emperor.

The second exhibition, dubbed “Ancient Capital: Urban Construction” emphasizes the movement from the old to the new world. It also highlights the adoption of new-age technologies which brought the nation to its present state. China’s urbanization is also included in this set.

The last exhibition, called “Stories of the Capital City – Old Beijing Folk-customs,” shows the belief of the Chinese in a Supreme Being, their perception on luck and on how folkways and folklores were vital in their early lives.

Aside from these portrayals, the museum also functions as a reception hall, cultural heritage storehouse, conference hall, and a digital movie hall where a gigantic screen with the latest technology are installed to display high-definition films. Hotels in Beijing and other accommodations are always ready to lend a helping hand to tourists who want to experience this unique and memorable opportunity.

Tips for a Impeccable Family Road Trip

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

Getting the family together for a road trip can be quite an exercise. And between heavy traffic, exhausted or restless kids and driver fatigue, the process of reaching there” can test anyone’s patience.

But some diligent preparation – for everything from fuel costs to rest stops – will make the experience pleasurable rather than frustrating.

AAA offers the following advice for families planning their next road journey.

Before You Go

* Take some time to plan your journey from starting to end. Plan your travel on the internet using www.aaamaps.com for point to point driving directions. If you don’t have access to the Internet, contact your nearest local AAA travel office for a custom-made triptik.

* Calculate your gas costs. If you are looking to pinch a penny on fuel, visit www.fuelcostcalculator.com. This website helps motorists calculate the cost of fuel for their travel based on the specific vehicle’s make, model and year.

* Give your car a checkup. Have your vehicle inspected by a certified automobile professional. To find a AAA Approved Auto Repair facility in your area, visit www.aaa.com.

* Remember, timing is everything. As you plot your travel, make time adjustments for traffic jams, road building and other factors that may reduce your expected speed.

On the Road

* Start fresh. Instead of leaving early after staying up late packing clothes and loading your vehicle, take enough of rest the night before your travel. Driving drowsy is extremely hazardous and leads to many clashes and deaths every year.

* Be safe. Make sure that all passengers are secured properly with safety belts and child safety seats as required. Choose the appropriate child safety seats for your children and make sure the seats are properly set up. Up to ninety % of child safety seats are wrongly set up.

* Keep your family engaged. If you are traveling with children, will need something to keep them busy. Be sure to bring games and books to help them pass the time. Many vehicles now feature on-board DVD players that can help keep children amused for hours.

* Stop periodically to stretch your legs. Take a break every two hours or every 100 miles, especially if you are traveling with children and pets. To keep off driver fatigue, make arrangements to alternate with other drivers. – NU

See London From The London Eye

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

The capital city of England and Britain, London, has a large selection of highly interesting tourist attractions, ranging from the incredibly old to the very young. The majority of the tourist attractions are known all ’round the globe (for instance, the Tower of London, Houses of Parliament and Buckingham Palace). Among the recently created are the London Aquarium, Millennium Dome, Millennium Bridge and the London Eye.

The Merlin Entertainments London Eye (to give it its correct title), is more usually referred to as, just, the London Eye or,occasionally, the Millennium Wheel (due to the fact that it was built as part of the Millennium celebrations). The Merlin Entertainments London Eye was opened officially by the then U.K. Prime Minister, Tony Blair, on the evening of December 31 however, alarmingly there was a number of technical safety problems which led to it not being opened to the public until March 2000. When first erected it was the world’s tallest Ferris wheel having a height of four hundred and forty three feet.

The gigantic wheel can be found on the South Bank in Jubilee Gardens peering down upon the Houses of Parliament below. From within one of the 32 capsules towering over London you can see a large number of the many London landmarks, the earlier mentioned Houses of Parliament, Hampton Court Palace, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace and St Paul’s are just some, what a great (and unique) way in which to see nearly all of London and, more than likely, one of the reasons it is one of the most popular visitor attraction in London.

The first flight on the London Eye is at 10 am but the ticket office opens at 9.30 am. The Eye closes at 9.30 pm between August and July, eight at night between October and April and at 9 ‘o clock at night for the remainder of the year.

Folk arriving by car will be pleased to know that there are 3 nearby car parks. For those traveling in coach parties there is parking very close to the Eye (phone) +44 (0)870 990 8886) for details.

The easiest method to travel to the London Eye is by the London Tube, simply get off at one of the following tube stations; Westminster, Embankment, Charing Cross, or the closest Waterloo. You can also arrive by boat, get off at Waterloo Millennium Pier.
