Enjoying Alcoholic Drinks

Friday, February 5th, 2010

In the West, alcoholic drinks are never far away from the scene at festive times, but do we aways know how to get the most from these costly luxuries? Too many people these days just think its a question of ‘getting as much down as possible in as little time as possible’. This is the wrong approach.

After all, most people realize that a good meal does not consist of eating as many chips as possible in fifteen minutes, so why should that principle not apply to consuming a drink too? You will get far more enjoyment from a bottle of wine, if you spend an extra dollar on it and drink it slowly with a friend and some suitable food than if you swill down a cheap bottle of plonk on your own. It makes obvious sense, but not everyone sees it.

So, with that thought in mind, I have put together a few tips on how to get more enjoyment from your alcoholic drinks, if you are old enough and of that turn of mind.

Gin and Vodka – if these white spirits are your favourite tipple, always keep the bottle in the fridge, not the drinks cupboard. Keep the mixers in the fridge too. That way the ice will last longer and you will not be tempted to have to gulp it down before the ice melts. If you are having friends around, go one step further and put the bottle in the freezer. It will not go solid. You can even cut the top off a plastic lemonade bottle, put the bottle of gin or vodka in that, fill it with water and then freeze it. Remove the plastic bottle and you have an attractive “collar of ice” around your bottle.

The Last Tot – five minutes or so after finishing a bottle of spirits, tip it out one more time and the bottle that you thought was drained will deliver one more tot of contents. It is not a lot, but it is a pleasant free surprise. The same works for many alcohol based items including underarm roll-on and perfume.

White Wine – white wines taste best when they have been gently chilled over a prolonged length of time, but if you get taken by surprise visitors, put the bottle of wine in a container of ice and cold water. Try not to have to put it in the deep freeze, it is too severe, but if you have to, then ten minutes is all that it takes.

Port – it is always better to decant port and older, heavier red wines, because of the sediment that may be in the bottom of the bottle, which tastes horrible and because it aids the aeration of the wine. However, it is not always easy to see when the dregs are coming. The manuals say to use a candle, but they were written a hundred years ago. The concentrated beam from a torch is far better. Try using a Durabeam because its rotateable head allows it to be directed more accurately.

Decanters – sometimes the stopper becomes stuck fast. Tap it with another glass item and it should come free. If not, run the neck of the decanter under hot water for a few seconds and it will come out.

Labels – if you store your wine in a damp place where the labels are likely to rot or fall off, spray them with hair lacquer beforehand.

A Gay Travel Guide For Spain

Friday, February 5th, 2010

Spain is among the first countries in the world to allow same-sex couples to freely enjoy the legal rights of marriage, to adopt children openly and to be treated as equals on a level that the American LGBT community is still struggling to achieve. So it is a great country for gay vacations. Because of this wide acceptance and legal equality, Spain is among the top choices for safe, enjoyable gay vacations. From the sexually-charged scene in Madrid, to the higher-brow LGBT culture of Sitges, there is a thriving community in every major city and many of the smaller towns throughout this country that offers breathtaking scenery, stunning architecture, rich culture and history, and wonderful year-round weather that makes any time a good time for gay vacations to Spain.

Welcoming islands, cities and towns that should not be missed include Barcelona, Benidorm, Gran Canaria, Ibiza, Sitges, Valencia and Torremolinos, which are the most popular destinations for a gay vacation in Spain. Most of these hotspots offer excellent beaches and all offer exciting nightlife and a visible community. While Madrid is the place to be for anyone looking for a raucous LGBT scene, Ibiza and Gran Canaria offer a more laidback beach lifestyle and Valencia and Torremolinos offer a good mix of bars and beaches.

One of the most welcoming cities in Spain is Barcelona, which boasts amazing architecture, art and culture and is home to more clubs, bars, restaurants, bathhouses and other community establishments than any traveler could fit into their gay trips. Visitors will surely want to visit LEixample, where most of the community bars and businesses are located, as well as the fabulous beaches located around this city that boasts a very active, very visible community. Barcelona is a cosmopolitan city that has earned its rank among the most welcoming, most out places in Europe and also makes a great home base for side trips to other areas that are popular with LGBT locals and visitors, such as the beach town of Sitges.

To make the most of your gay single travel, consider traveling to Spain as part of an organized gay travel tour group, which will allow you to explore this fascinating country and all that it has to offer while making new friends and sharing your experiences with like-minded tourists.

If you prefer to explore alone, or with your partner or a small group friends, consider arranging your trip through a professional travel agency that is accustomed to organizing gay tours to Spain. This will help ensure that you have a great travel experience that is safe and enjoyable.

The Spiritual Journey And Spiritual Travel

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

Traveling for many is a way of unwinding and recharging their batteries but often at the end of one’s travel there is still a feeling of not feeling satisfied which is when it pays to consider spiritual travel as a means of finding fulfillment. Sometimes, all the Gothic cathedrals in the world and all the lovely Madonna portraits are not enough to lift up your spirits and so it pays to consider traveling to a place where you can find spiritual awakening.

Gay spirituality travel is of course not a buzzword that travel agents use to entice customers. In fact, people have traveled on pilgrimages from the very earliest times of our history and so it is something that has always held attraction to a certain type of person. From the 16th century onward it was common for Spanish Jesuits to travel to places such as Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay where they established missions to educate natives of those countries.

In these modern times, traveling for spiritual reasons has become more popular and there are numerous options to choose from that include going to places other than Yucatan, the Vatican and also Egypt. The best way to lift up your spirits is to travel to places where the surroundings are idyllic and a good example is a Buddhist monastery which is mainly found in Asia though some are also located in Europe and in the United States.

For the real Buddhist spiritual travel experience you ought to consider making Bodhgaya (located in Bihar in India). This is the very place where the revered Lord Buddha sat and obtained enlightenment beneath a huge Bodhi tree. Today, this place has seen a huge Mahabodi Temple complex being constructed here and which is inhabited by Buddhist monks from every part of the world.

This particular place is truly exceptional as the surroundings are serenity personified and everything here is absolutely peaceful so as to promote true spiritualistic experiences. It is here that monks read the Holy Scriptures and spend their time contemplating the complexities and meaning of life.

The best way to fly into Bodhgaya is to take a flight from Kolkata to Gaya airport. However, if you want to fly in from the rest of India you will need to deplane at Patna airport that is almost a hundred kilometers away from there. A train journey is the more relaxed and cheaper mode of transport and all it requires is to get off at Gaya from where Bodhgaya is not far away.

For those who are planning to travel from the rest of India the closest airport is Patna which is also the capital of Bihar and which is 87 miles from the town of Bodhgaya. You can also choose to travel by train which will mean getting off at Gaya that is close to Bodhgaya and which means traveling at leisure and for considerably less cost.

There are few better places to find gay retreats than Bodhgaya that has kept itself pure and untouched by the ravages of modern civilization. So, a visit to Bodhgaya will not only be very pleasant and productive; it will also be a very different and unique experience as well.

Pointers conceived by Howie Holben. Spirit Journeys has gay retreats that blend well as romantic gay getaways.

Say No To Wrinkles

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

Take care – Wrinkles and pains are the dark side of the summer sun.

Oh – finally. Bright days, strong sunshine, birds singing and a the air seems clear and fresh. Outside the life-giving sun beckons with promises of warm holiday time, outdoors, impromptu gatherings and experiences. No doubt about that the life-giving force of light is of great importance for our mood and wellbeing. But no roses without thorns, and no sun without a shadow side.

The sun is harsh on the skin – and the series of threats ranges from itching, dehydration and increased wrinkle formation to severe burns and increased risk of cancer. But you can do much to get the full benefit of the sun, while you reduce the disadvantages: Common sense, healthy lifestyles and a little extra help for the body – both in terms of protecting and rebuilding. So taking care of your skin is something you should not take lightly.

20 square feet of sensitivity

The skin, which covers an area of approx 20 square feet, is your body’s largest organ and it is more than just surface. Indeed, the skin consists of three very different layers – and wrinkles that appear on the skin’s surface is actually formed due to changes under the skin’s surface. The three layers are called the epidermis, the leather skin (dermis) and the subcutaneous tissue, which is a layer of fat. Between these layers there are both blood vessels, hair roots, sweat glands and sebaceous glands.

Elastic – but not forever

The subcutaneous tissue consists mainly of a protein (collagen), which gives the skin structure and of fibers (elastin) that makes skin elastic. Vitamin C is an important part of the process of forming fibers. The elastic fibers are challenged over time due to various influences, both outside and inside: sun, wind, drying, smoking, diet, air pollution, X-rays and pesticides. Free radicals, which is aggressive oxygen, is a major cause of skin aging. But you can, to some extent neutralize the free radicals with antioxidants, both through your diet and through skin care.

Diet and care

Greedy vegetables, berries and fruit contains a large number of important antioxidants in the form of bioflavonoids, also called P-vitamin. In nature there are numerous – perhaps up to 20,000 different – bioflavonoids. They are water soluble and easily absorbed quickly into the body and has numerous beneficial features – including a halt to the wrinkle formation. So the battle against wrinkles starts with a good diet, and the best followed up with the right skincare products and dietary supplements.

Sun is not just light

Age, diet and external factors are crucial for the formation of wrinkles. And during summer the sun is an additional, external threat. Sun damage is mainly due to the invisible ultraviolet rays – and there are several types of them. They affect the skin differently and require different protection. The body builds self-defenses, among other things the skin becomes thicker, and pigments will be “induced” by the production of melanin. But the process takes time – and burdens, moreover, the skin, which risks being “overworked”. This is why you should help your skin with serious and consistent skin care. Before, during and after the sun’s challenges.

Preparing And Storing Food – A few Handy Tips

Friday, January 29th, 2010

In these times of superior awareness of the shortages in the world and the recent economic problems in the whole world, but particularly in the wealthy Western countries, which are the powerhouses of most Third World countries’ progress, people are more aware of waste. It is a sin again to throw away food, like it was 50 years ago.

This can only be a good thing although it is a shame that it took an international financial disaster to make us recall the lesson. These days, waste of any kind is greeted with public censure and so it is at home too. Most people spend a very high percentage of their outgoings on food and so anyone who wants to cut back, has to first look to this quarter to make a saving.

However, saving does not necessarily mean ‘not buying’, it can and should mean ‘not throwing away’. In other words, prepare your food and do not let your food go off. Preparation and storage are the major words. With that thought in mind, here are a few of my tips for preparing and storing food correctly.

Bread – tons of bread is thrown away every day, because it has gone stale or mouldy and yet it is totally needless. Store your bread in the deep freezer and not in the bread bin. A whole loaf will slice frozen with the proper knife and sliced bread will come away slice by slice. There is no need to defrost as it only takes a minute or two at room temperature.

Bananas – most people know that banana skins go black if stored in the fridge, but most people do not know that bananas can be frozen solid. Yes, the skins will still go black, but the fruit will be undamaged.

Cake – to stop cake from going stale, store it in a tin with an apple. The moisture in the apple will stop the cake from going hard.

Watercress – to keep watercress from wilting, store it upside down in water, that is stalks up.

Salt – salt often gets damp, especially if stored in a steamy kitchen without sufficient ventilation, but you do not have to worry about that if you put two or three grains of rice in the salt cellar. They will soak up the moisture before the salt.

Cereal – prevent cereal from going soft by resealing the bag with a few clothes pegs. Your cereal will last weeks more.

Jam – boiling jam produces a scum which has to be skimmed off and thrown away. This wastes jam, goodness and flavour. However, if you whisk a knob of butter into the mixture at the last moment the scum will not appear, saving time and goodness.

Funnel – you always seem to need a funnel when you do not have one. Then you vow to get a funnel for the next time. Do not bother. Just cut the top nine inches off a plastic bottle of cola. It makes an excellent throw-away funnel. Some of the larger bottles even have a handle on them which is even better.

The Beginnings of Aikido

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

The term ‘Aikido’ is created by the grouping of three characters in the Japanese language. ‘Ai’, which signifies ‘joining’; ‘ki’, which means ’spirit’ and ‘do’, which means ‘way’. These three words actually encapsulate the essence of Aikido as a sort of martial art: ‘the joining of the spirit to find the way’. It was only in the period from 1930’s to the 1940’s that the name Aikido was formally accepted as the name of this martial art variety.

Aikido uses ways that do not mortally injure or kill not like other kinds of martial art. The movements and skills being taught are just intended to divert attention or immobilize attackers. This is possibly the explanation why most people prefer Aikido, because of its focus on peace and harmony as opposed to violence and hostility. In deed, Aikido teacher, Morihei Ueshiba, is of the conviction that to control hostility without causing any harm is the art of peace.

Ueshiba, who is also called Osensei, which signifies ‘Great Teacher’, formed Aikido from the principles of Daito-ryu aiki-jujutsu. He incorporated the ways of the ‘yari’, the spear; the ‘juken’, the bayonet; and the ‘jo’, which is a short quarterstaff. But what ultimately separates Aikido from other kinds of martial art is the fact that its practitioners can attack while empty-handed. Proponents need no arms for their defense.

As a young child, he was much into physical fitness and conditioning. This was because of his oath to avenge his father’s attackers. In due course, his studies and activities brought him to the discipline of the different martial arts. He studied a few of them. He even has certificates for fencing, fighting with spears, etc. He has learned it all. This is possibly the explanation why Aikido is such a diverse and multi-disciplinary sort of martial art.

Yet in spite of his skill, he remained discontented. He felt that there was still something missing. It was then that he turned to the religions. He studied under a spiritual leader, Onisaburo Deguchi of the sect named Omoto-kyo in Ayabe. Deguchi taught him to take care of his psychic growth. He then combined his spiritual beliefs and his mastery of the different martial arts and Aikido was born.

His involvement with this charismatic spiritual leader Deguchi also smoothed the path for his introduction to the elite political and military personnel as a martial artist. Because of this connection, he was able to found Aikido and even pass on his knowledge to students, who have, in turn, developed their own styles and movement in Aikido.

Aikido is a blend of the different styles of jujitsu as well as some of the techniques of sword and spear fighting, of which Ueshiba was an expert. To obtain an general picture, Aikido combines the joint locks and throws of jujitsu and the techniques of the body necessary when fighting with swords and spears.

Oriental in origin, it was brought to the West by Minoru Mochizuki when he visited France in 1951. He introduced the Aikido methods to students who were learning judo. In 1952, Tadashi Abe came to France as the official Aikikai Honbu representative. Then in 1953, Kenji Tomiki toured throughout the United States while Koichi Tohei stayed in Hawaii for a full year where he set up a dojo. Aikido then spread its influence in the United Kingdom two years after and in 1965, it reached Germany and Australia. At present, Aikido has centres all over the world.

Quick Natural Slimming – Clarified

Sunday, September 20th, 2009

Our friendships can have quite an influence on how we live our lives. There’s a tangible link between the way we behave and the men and women we have friendships with. And yet we’re likely to have presumed this commonality concerned our likes and dislikes – for example we enjoy the same musical tastes as our friends, or hold similar political views.

Lately though, studies are claiming that we will have more tendency to be overweight if we hang around with others who are overweight. According to a recent news article, we have a tendency to consume more when eating with heavier people who we know well. A US research team looked at kids eating habits. They found that the heavier ones ate more when they were with their heavier pals than when they were with their slimmer friends.

Everyone in the group actually devoured more when they were in the company of friends, regardless of their size. But pairing up overweight friends led to the biggest consumption of all. The study was undertaken by researchers from the State University of New York at Buffalo. It highlighted the role friends play in influencing how much youngsters eat.

Certainly, it’s human nature to feel more secure in our actions when we’re amongst friends. We’re not so self-aware with people we like and know well. But there’s possibly more to it than that – we intuitively view friends as permission givers. We grant them the right to define acceptability – in this case in relation to food quantities.

The researchers observed a whole mix of young people for this study. They were split into groups of two friends, or groups of two strangers. All were furnished with nibbles, fruit and vegetables. They also had various games to keep them occupied.

All the ones who teamed up with a friend ate a larger amount than the rest. However it was the pairs who were both overweight who consumed the most in total. And the variations were considerable, as shown below.

Nearly seven hundred and fifty calories per person was consumed by the larger pairs of friends. Heavy kids with standard weight chums ate just under 450 cals, and standard weight kids ate approx 500 cals whatever weight their mate was. This influence extends to smoking and drinking as well with young teens.

The research team looking at food consumption had to conclude that peers played an influential role in a young person’s dietary habits. This sounds very negative, but of course it means that if youngsters were to associate more with friends who eat a balanced diet, then they too are likely to adjust their habits over time. A good argument for teaching sound nutrition!

Tanning Bulbs

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

Tanning bed bulbs are used in every tan bed or suntan lamp on the market. When you are buying a new or especially a used tanning bed, take a good look at the bulbs. Make sure that they are proper tanning lamps and meet the FDA guidelines for health and safety. You should also consider how easy it is to get at the lamps. Make sure that the bulbs are easy to change when needed. It is quite important and a lot cheaper if you can perform such simple maintenance yourself, if you have a home sun bed.

There are different sorts of bulbs used in conventional and high pressure beds. Make sure you buy the right tanning bed lamps for your bed, because they are not interchangeable. If you are purchasing replacement bulbs on the Internet, check the make and model of your existing lamps carefully. Make sure that the lamps you are buying are suitable for your bed.

High Pressure Bulbs: high pressure beds use quartz lamps in various sizes. The gases inside these bulbs have a pressure that is slightly higher than atmospheric pressure. The lamps in these beds are located in the hood of the bed, so that you tan from above only. When you have tanned the skin on one side of your body for about 10-12 minutes, you turn over and tan the other side. The bed of these devices is much more comfortable than a conventional sun bed.

One of the biggest benefit of these HP bulbs is the amount of time you need to spend on the sun bed. Since you tan faster, you need to spend less time in the tanning salon, which means it works out cheaper. You can achieve the depth of tan you require in about three weeks of three to five sessions a week. However, with a conventional bed, it would take you at least a month to acquire the same level of colour. Maintaining your tan is a lot easier too. You only need two or three sessions a month to maintain the colour, as opposed to four times that many visits to a low pressure salon bed. Many of these lamps use UVA rays only, not UVB rays which cause sunburn.

Conventional Sun Bed Lamps: Conventional, or low pressure beds use long tube lamps that resemble normal fluorescent tubes. The lamps are located in the top and the bottom of the sun bed, which means that all the body parts are tanned at the together, without needing to roll over during the tanning session.

Low pressure beds use UVA and UVB rays in varying mixes. Some use both rays and others emit mostly UVA with some UVB rays. UVA rays are the cause of the (premature) ageing effects on the skin and UVB rays are the burning rays that cause skin burn when you are outside in the sun. It is very important to determine which sort of rays your sun bed’s bulbs emit. You must ensure you replace your existing bulbs with the same new lamps after about 1,000 hours of use.

Something else to think about when selecting the type of bed you use at home or in the salon, is the tanning bed lotion you will use. Different lotions suit different types of beds. The owner of your tanning salon will be able to help you select a lotion that will be best for the bed you are using and your skin type. No matter what bed you use, you ought to definitely always use a lotion or a cream, because they will nourish your skin and help you get a Hollywood tan more quickly.
