The Ancient Roots of Barry, South Wales: Part 2.

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

In the Eighteenth Century, they found dishes, saws, knives, flints, a scraper, a prehistoric horn celt with strange markings, a spokeshave and some arrowheads from the Neolithic Period. These artifacts are safely ensconced in the Museum of Wales in Cardiff, but unfortunately, no one at the time thought the find significant enough to warrant a dig and now there are houses on it.

An ancient Roman kitchen replete with cooking utensils and food remains was also abandoned without investigation. In 1533, Leland, the King’s Antiquary, was ordered to visit ‘all places where records are held’. It took him nine years and he wrote of Barry Island:

“It is about a mile in circumference and has good corn, grass and some wood, and there is no dwelling on the Island, but in the midst of it is a fair little Chapel of St. Baruch which is visited by many pilgrims. It took the name Barri from this holy man who was buried there and whose remains are yet on the Island”. (The Welsh name for Barry is Y Barri).

Vikings raided the coastline of south Wales in the Tenth Century often taking hostages from the monasteries, but they did not seek to settle the area. The island was known as the ‘Saints’ Retreat’ or the ‘Island of Saints’ for a long time. Later, in the Sixteenth Century, the island was used by smugglers and pirates and was known locally as the ‘Smugglers’ Fortress’. This occurred at the same time as Bristol, Britain’s second largest port, was growing rapidly.

The island soon became the centre for smuggling and piracy in the Bristol Channel. In 1784, Barry Island became known as ‘The Fortress of Knight’. Kight was the most frequent and feared pirate in the channel but people were too afraid to speak out against him. He was also a local celebrity. His ship was armed and named ‘John O’ Combe’. The navy eventually routed him and he moved down to Lundy Island, which he also turned into a fortress. However, he and his successor, Arthur, went back to Barry so often that Customs requested the government to send a cutter to Penarth and 60 soldiers to Barry on permanent duty.

The seaside village of Rhoose was so renowned for its wreckers that George II sent troops to break up the gangs. They landed at Aberthaw, just up the coast a bit, “the Rhoose men’s favourite landing zone, from where they could easily transport the contraband along Port Road to Cardiff, the main market for such things”. While building the docks at Barry in the late Nineteenth Century, several large caves were filled in. They were probably used by the pirates who were moved on again in or about 1850.

Wedding Traditions Advice

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Wedding traditions are worldwide; some traditions have been in place for centuries and other traditions however are quaintly new, you can even start your own family wedding traditions. One lovely wedding tradition is the wearing a tiara and is taken from ancient times where there was a white ribbon worn around the shoulders and head of a king, which signified his power and wealth. Obviously this tradition has changed and the woman has taken over the wearing of a tiara which is normally half moon shaped encrusted with expensive gems.

If the wedding is truly traditional then the bridesmaids will also wear tiaras on their heads albeit smaller and less well adorned examples than that worn by the bride. The tiara is the finishing touch to the wedding dress and many women will keep this beautiful item for the rest of their lives, such is the importance of it. Often the bride’s attendants like bridesmaids, flower girls and maid of honor are presented with rings shaped like miniature tiaras which can make really beautiful wedding favors for those directly involved in the wedding.

It wasn’t that long ago that the people belonging to the wedding party would take the newly weds to the honeymoon location. It was then the party’s task to try and take the garter from the bride’s leg as the prize would be for this person to then wear it like a band around their hat or alternatively to a woman for whose attentions they were after. The enthusiasm that this wedding tradition produced was often too much and the attempt to remove the garter ended in the bride being undressed so to stop this unseemly behavior, brides tried throwing the garter to the men in the party as soon as she was married.

Tradition said that the man to catch the thrown garter would be the next to be wed but unfortunately many men that had consumed too much alcohol would attempt to take the garter by force. Once again it was necessary for a wedding custom to be changed so brides started too throw the bouquet of flowers to the ladies at the wedding instead which had the same meaning as the thrown garter. Most brides have taken to wearing the garter again even though they are rarely ever used to keep stockings up anymore; nevertheless they have become very popular.

Women who are trying to stick to tradition will wear a blue garter as it is considered a lucky color but many brides like the somewhat more saucy red as their preferred color. Just to keep up with the times it is not uncommon for the bride to allow the groom to remove the garter and then throw it over his shoulder to the male wedding guests. Tradition says that the man who unmarried man that catches the garter will be the first of the wedding party men to marry within twelve months.

Don’t Miss Out On Big Bear Lake, CA Homes For Sale

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Big Bear Lake, CA has been a great place to call home since I was a child. I am also a realtor in Big Bea Lake, CA homes for sale. Big Bear homes are very charming in the way they are built. But one of the best things about Big Bear homes is Big Bear Lake, CA itself.

Big Bear has the best of both worlds for the week and weekends. This small town is very peaceful when visitors are away. Going out is seldom a hassle with lines and parking. There are no crowds and no one is hurrying you along. Also many homes are not primary residences, so there is a lot of quietude on many streets. Compared to the hustling cities down the hill, Big Bear can be quite a relief, especially to your lungs. We do have very, very clean air up here.

Take a trip to Big Bear Lake, CA and inhale the fresh, clean air. The air quality is virtually devoid of yuck. And do you now what else that means besides healthy lungs? More stars. So many stars that you won’t know where to look first. We have an amazing night sky unlike anything I have ever seen anywhere else.

Big Bear isn’t the only city in the San Bernadino mountains. But it is the best, if I do say so myself. It’s not too small and not too big. You can find all the quaint shops you want or go shopping at major retailers like Vons, Kmart or Payless, pick up a movie at Blockbuster or stop in for a bite at Taco Bell or McDonalds.

Big Bear also has close to 100 restaurants to dine at, unlike some other mountain cities. We have six movie screens in two locations, pubs, a dance hall and even Kmart. So if you do want to own a Big Bear vacation home, you don’t have to take a vacation from the essentials, and a few nice extras.

Finally, a Big Bear home is a good place to invest your money. Because we are comprised of mainly second and vacation homes, we have not been hit as hard as other areas by the current recession. As a whole, Big Bear Lake, CA homes have held their value much better than the rest of San Bernardino County. Bank Owned Properties are only making up between 5-10% of our current MLS.

Some cities have over half of their real estate caught up in foreclosure. Big Bear real estate is actually on the rise in a way. More and more Big Bear homes are actually being sold. This year we are up almost half as much more than last year. And most houses are being bid on and are not forced to take their first offers.

As you can see I’m kind of an advocate of Big Bear Lake, CA homes. If you’re still interested in more about Big Bear Lake, CA homes for sale, look around for more of my ramblings. Hope to see you up here where everything is better soon!

Pick a Camp-Read a Blog

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Getting a good feel for a summer camp is not all that easy, checking out a camp blog can help. Here are just a few things you might find at Swift Nature Camp’s Blog. Camp Blog

Expect to capsize and swim occasionally when paddling a canoe, kayak or raft – it’s part of the sport! But when you hit the water unexpectedly, even strong swimmers need a lifejacket, also known as a personal flotation device (PFD). It allows you to concentrate on doing what’s needed to execute a self rescue and will allow you to assist others. Nearly 70% of all drownings involving canoes, kayaks or rafts might have been avoided if the victim had been wearing a lifejacket!

It seems as if we are learning more that Summer Camp helps children grow into mature adults. A new British study finds that most modern parents overprotect their kids. Half of all kids have stopped climbing trees, and 17 percent have been told that they can’t play tag or chase. Even hide-and-seek has been deemed dangerous. And that dreaded stick…”will put out someone’s eye”. It is easy to blame technology for the decline in outdoor play, but it may well be mom and dad. Adrian Voce of Play England says ‘Children are not being allowed many of the freedoms that were taken for granted when we were children,’ ‘They are not enjoying the opportunities to play outside that most people would have thought of as normal when they were growing up.’ According to the Guardian, “Voce argued that it was becoming a ’social norm’ for younger children to be allowed out only when accompanied by an adult. ‘Logistically that is very difficult for parents to manage because of the time pressures on normal family life,’ he said. ‘If you don’t want your children to play out alone and you have not got the time to take them out then they will spend more time on the computer.’ The Play England study quotes a number of play providers who highlight the benefits to children of taking risks. ‘Risk-taking increases the resilience of children,’ said one. ‘It helps them make judgments,’ said another. We as parents want to play it safe and we need to rethink safety vs adventure. The research also lists examples of risky play that should be encouraged including fire-building, den-making, watersports, paintballing, boxing and climbing trees. Summer camp provides an excellent opportunity for children to get outside take risks and play, all while still while being supervised by concerned young adults…we call counselors. See how Swift Nature Camp can put Adventure back into your childs life.

The Russell W. Hogrefe Fresh Start Fund was established by Russell W. Hogrefe during his tenure as Executive Director of the American Camp Association, Illinois Section. He served in that position from 1979 until his retirement in 1996. Russ spent his entire professional career providing children’s summer camp and other services to families with very low income. Teachers, social workers, counselors or other professionals refer campers. ACA Illinois Section staff and the person making the referral select an appropriate day or resident camp program. Camps must be accredited by the American Camp Association. The camper’s family is encouraged to pay whatever they can afford for the camping experience. The camp provides a partial campership and the Fund pays the balance. If you would like to donate fund to help an underprivileged child attend summer camp in 2009 please send a check or make an online donation. Summer camp is an experience that enriches lives and all children should have the opportunity to attend kids summer camp. To learn how Swift Nature Camp can help your child attend camp visit our website.

So what can you do a camp that you cant do at Home? How bout shooting guns? Yep, one of the fun activity at this kids camp is riflery. This is one area at camp where there is no clowning around. We take teaching riflery very seriously. It may be a tradition at many summer camp. But we are very proud that our riflery range is our safest area at camp. At Swift Nature Camp we only shoot at targets and we shoot from the prone position (thats lying down) , our guns are single shot .22 caliber rifles. Our campers try to earn our camp Marksman awards. Often parents ask why have rifles at camp? The answer is …we want to teach children how to properly and safely operate a gun. Campers also learn life lessons, like you need to practice and as you do practice bit by bit, you improve and before you know it you are loving Riflery.

We at Swift Nature Camp believe that your child’s safety is the most important part of camp. That is why we have a strict Lifejacket rule. Everyone must wear a PDF when in a boat. No exceptions, staff and campers alike. THis is true if on a river canoe trip or on on our own camp lake. Water is so much fun and kids love it but it is dangerous and we must be prepared. We even have a special “titanic test” to ensure that our lifejacket fits nice and snug in case of an emergency. Campers learn this the first day of camp.

Antarctica Cruise Ships – What to Consider

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

There are many decisions to make when taking a cruise to Antarctica. One of these decisions has to do with which type of cruise ship would best accommodate your vacation needs. This article is going to explain the advantages of what would be best for you when considering Antarctic cruises.

Traveling by a small or big ship is the first decision you must make for the Antarctic cruise. You can plan on between 50 100 passengers on a small ship. Larger ships often hold from 200 to 3000 people at anytime. You need to weigh the pros and cons when it comes to choosing a ship for your Antarctic travel.

Recreational activities aboard large vessels are comparable to those on land vacations. Lounge by the pool or play at casinos or do something else involving groups while cruising. The ship has doctors handy for your medical concerns as well as people to help with your nails and hair before formal banquets. Expect a more detached atmosphere on large vessel Antarctica cruises.

Big vessels rarely cruise and touch the banks. They are forced to comply with environmental edicts and those concerning passenger populations. If sightseeing is more your scene then cruise ship travel might not be suitable. See if there are limits on shore travel by large cruise ships that are specified in certain regulations. Seagoing vessels have schedules to keep so they can only stay at a certain location briefly.

Ships that are smaller stop frequently and afford you a grander time since you get to tour more. Such ships are anchored next to shore and give you more hours to enjoy the wild animals and vegetation. Fewer people also make traveling manageable.

Cruises on small ships are less formal. The cruise personnel along with the rest of the passengers are likewise easy to approach. Pursue your hobbies like mountain hiking and scuba diving or other activities while cruising. Passengers are not charged for consulting physicians at the small ship clinic. Bigger vessels attach a fee for this.

Safety is always a prime concern. A small ship frequently ranks high in terms of its ice rating. They avoid cuts and other damage from hidden icebergs by being built hard enough to withstand the ice. Make sure that the ship you will be travelling on is fully equipped with what it needs in case of an emergency. Ships abide by certain laws so this is rarely a concern.

You can learn a lot on a small ship. Experts particularly historians are there to teach you about Antarctica and the experience as a whole. It is important to look for a company that specialized in Antarctica Cruises. This will help you get the most from your experiences. Having an idea what distinguishes small ships from large ones will clue you in on which is the better choice. You would definitely want a memorable cruise experience.

How To Plan For A Stress-Free Wedding Day

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Careful planning is important preceding your wedding so that it turns out just perfect. A wedding day must only carry sweet recollections for the couple, so anything that can spoil the day should be handled properly before the event. It requires utmost attention to every detail and therefore the organizers and the couple are always anxious until that day. A good way to ensure that potential problems on the wedding day are lessened is by planning for services like pre wedding photography.

Pre-wedding photography is something that every couple must consider before finalising a photographer for the big day. Taking a chance with photographs of perhaps the most significant day in your life is never a prudent decision as you are going to invoke your wedding memories through these photographs only. Hence to know whether the photographer’s talent will match up to your hopes, you should test his work before the auspicious day by hiring him in a pre-wedding photography session.

An classy and easy to carry wedding gown will also help you feel relaxed on the wedding day, and therefore it should be cautiously picked much before the day. A bulky dress with yards of pleated silk can cause much trouble for the bride during outdoor weddings, and hence the wedding dress selection must be made according to the venue.

Elaborate pre wedding arrangements along with all the accompanying tasks such as pre wedding photography can be quite sapping for the couple, but they need to be able to recover quickly for the big day. To look your best on the wedding day, a appropriate dietary discipline has to be sustained before the wedding. Taking in lots of liquids will bring a fresh glow on your face on the day.

So if your wedding is around the corner, then in order to make it a truly momentous one, you must adhere to the above guidelines that will make the day one you will fondly recall forever.

Wedding Cakes, Dresses, Venues, and Invites: How to Get Started

Monday, September 28th, 2009

There are countless factors that go into planning a successful wedding. Now that you have the ring, how do you get started? Here are a few important factors that can get the ball rolling.

Where you’re going to have your ceremony and reception will effect many other choices, so you should start with this. Keep in mind how many guests you think you’ll be having to be sure that your location can accommodate them all.

You will want to keep track of what you can spend and where you need to spend it. Budgeting is a very important step of the planning process. There are several online resources that can show you the average percentages spent in each area of a wedding budget

The dress is one of the most obvious and exciting parts of planning your wedding. Pick out a few bridal shops, call ahead so they’ll have someone available to help you, and bring a few of your closest friends. You’ll have a great time and it’ll set the mood for the rest of the planning.

Choosing a caterer can be tricky. Try to figure out what tone you’re trying to achieve with your event and try to find food that both fits that theme and your budget. Most caterers will offer free or low priced tasting, so you may want to take advantage of this.

The guest list can be a sore point in wedding planning. You may both want many friends, family members, and coworkers there, and your parents may be even more eager to invite people to see your big day. Just keep in mind one of the best ways to stay on budget is to limit the guest list. Try to keep it to people you truly know and want there to celebrate with you.

Invitations and save the date cards should go out well before the date of your wedding in order to ensure people have time to make arrangements, and you have time to determine who is coming. You can get invitations and save the dates from online stores, print shops, or department stores if you only want the decorative paper and will print the details yourself.

There is a huge number of options when it comes to your wedding cake. You will want to consider both aesthetics and taste when visiting bakers. If you can’t make up your mind, you can always have different kinds of cake on different layers.

Well there you have it. This is a good starting place, but there’s plenty more to do. Remember to relax and enjoy this process.
